Student Service Projects

Stand up conference logo Lakeview High School World at War classes have undertaken several service projects in connection with the follow-up MAGPI videoconference on January 17. We are looking forward to hearing about activities in which other schools have been involved.

What we are doing here at Lakeview High School is three different projects. First, we spent a day creating Christmas Cards for veterans and will be delivering them to a VA Hospital in our town where we will spend some time with the Veterans there.

Second, we are working with our local Habitat for Humanity and a group called the Haven of Rest to help redevelop some housing for individuals who have been homeless and who have gone through a program to get back on their feet. The housing we are working on will be permanent housing for them.

Finally, we are putting together 30 packets of school supplies for Iraqi children…

The book touched me deeply and the terrible crimes of the Nazi party can never be justified or forgotten. Gerda showed great courage and dignety in all of her suffering and that of her family as well. These were respected citizens prior to the ruthlessness of Hitlers campaign and the ideas he instilled in the people who at first looked at him as a saviour from unemplyment and years of suffering. Many Germans were not on the side of the Nazis but Hitler had created a life of fear even for the Germans. There were spies everywhere and if anybody openly spoke out or was critical of the Nazi regime those people were dealt with quickly and severely. Also many Germans did not know till the very end what had really happened and what was behind Hitler’s ” final solution”. Many were stunned in disbelief, horror and shame. That shame will always be a black mark, no matter what Germany did afterwards to compensate, just as the injustice against the Jewish people will never be forgotten. Gerda’s descendants and future generations will still be affected by it and we say rightfully “never again”. Yet, we don’t have to look far to find cruelty, injustice, neighbors killing neighbors because of race, religion or greed and it’s going on right now in various locations in this world. May God help us to keep peace in this country, where we still live relatively safe and secure and may he give us the wisdom and tolerance to live side by side with those who are different from us.

I think that it is great that people are taking time to do community service projects because this shows how much of an affect that Gerda has taken on Battle Creek
